Question
God, what daily bread are you offering me today that I may be overlooking?
Here's the episode transcript
Hey, friend. Today we're talking with God through the Lord's Prayer, which is something that Jesus gave us as His followers to teach us not what to pray, it's not a prayer script, but how to pray. How to approach God in prayer with an awareness of who He is and who we are, and our needs, and what He's doing, and how we can come to Him with all of these different aspects of daily life.
And today we're in Matthew 6 verse 11: “Give us today our daily bread." Daily bread trains us to receive today's provision without demanding tomorrow's supply in advance. Now, I can struggle with this a little bit. I'd prefer weekly bread. Monthly bread.
Daily dependence can feel deeply inconvenient because I can struggle to really trust that God's gonna come through in the future. I can forget what He's done, and I can want to build a little stockpile for myself. Now, saving is good. Planning for the future is good. That's not what I'm talking about here. What Jesus is modeling for us in how to approach God, to come in dependence on the Lord every day. To come to receive the things that we need, that He will supply tangible needs for us.
Daily bread can also include the other needs that we have, not just physical, but spiritual and relational. God offers us wisdom and strength and grace and mercy and peace and patience and courage for each day. We can come to Him with our needs, sharing what we're in need of and asking God to provide, to supply. And again, I can struggle here because I kinda would wish sometimes that God would provide tomorrow's strength early.
I think about this when I see someone walking through a really difficult season with a tremendous amount of grace. God has given them a unique grace for that need, and I don't necessarily have that same strength or peace or grace to walk through that because that's not what I'm facing. God gives us our daily bread.
And so the focus for today is simply coming to the Lord with our needs and asking for Him to supply according to His good purposes for what we need for today. And part of doing this helps us build a regular habit of coming to God in dependence on Him. In recognizing that He is God and we are not.
And so I invite you to ask the Lord for the things that you already know that you need today. And then to take the conversation a step further, I invite you to take this question to Him next:
“God, what daily bread are you already offering me today that I might be overlooking?”
And then receive that from Him too.
Have a good talk.
