Episode #383 What Would Change If I Saw This Through God’s Eyes? – Practicing Conversations With God
From Today's Episode:
In today’s episode, we talk about how awareness changes how you live.
Ever notice how once you start shopping for something, you suddenly see it everywhere? That same kind of awareness can happen with God—we just have to set our minds on Him first. In this episode, we look at Colossians 3 and talk about what it means to live from your identity as God's beloved instead of striving to earn it, plus a simple question you can ask Him today to start seeing your circumstances through His eyes. It's a gentle invitation into faith-based reflection for anyone craving a little more peace and connection with God in the middle of an ordinary, overwhelming day.
Our Good God talks with us and we're created for life with Him, so let's experience more of it!

Question
God, what would change if I saw this a bit more through your eyes?
Here's the episode transcript
Hey, friends. Today we're practicing growing in our awareness of God. Why? Because the things that we're aware of impact what we pay attention to, which ultimately changes how we live. The simplest, most anecdotal example of this is what happens when you start shopping for a new big purchase. For example, what happens when you're shopping for a new car? All of a sudden, you start seeing that car everywhere, right? That make, that model, that color, because you've started looking into it. Or maybe you even just made the purchase. And now, on the road, you start noticing all of these other cars that look like yours. That awareness comes because you started paying attention to it. It's not like the day you bought your new car, everyone else went and bought the same vehicle.
The same thing happens in other areas of our lives.
And so we're gonna practice today growing our awareness of God, and how we do that is described for us in Colossians chapter 3, by what we set our minds on. I'm actually gonna read a few different verses from that chapter, starting in verse 1.
It says, "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you will also appear with him in glory."
And so in this passage, we're receiving instruction for how to live while we're still on Earth, and the instruction is summarized: don't live like this is all that matters. Seek things that are above. Set your mind on things that are of Christ and are of where He is in God's kingdom.
The passage then continues to talk about the things that we are to put to death, but I wanna jump us ahead to verse 12. "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another." And then it goes on to talk about offering forgiveness to each other as the Word of Christ dwells in us richly.
In the past, I've read these passages as instruction for me to figure out how to do. “Okay, I am one of God's people, so I need to figure out how to have more compassion in my heart and to show more kindness and humility and meekness and patience.” But the instruction actually comes from a different vantage point.
Live from the identity of who you are, holy and already beloved.
And so when we live from that identity, we live from right relationship with God, and that flows into right relationship with others. It's not a do harder, be better, have more compassion or kindness. It's a, “Hey, see things from God's vantage point, where Christ is above, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on the things that are on Earth. Live from your identity as a chosen one.” You are already made holy in Christ. You are already His beloved. And so then that flows into how we live.
So circling back to this concept of awareness and the car analogy. We are those who are already beloved. In Christ we have already died to our sin natures. We are made alive in Christ, and we are learning to live daily according to that identity, right? And so as we go through the circumstances of today, our awareness doesn't just have to be limited to the tangible physical things here on Earth. We get to grow in our awareness of how God is at work, even as we go through ordinary things.
And so we're gonna ask God to help us see ordinary things through this lens, and here's our question to ask Him:
God, what would change if I saw this a bit more through your eyes?
I don't know what the “this” is for you. Maybe it's a hard circumstance, a decision you need to make, a challenging relationship, or simply a rough day. But I'm excited for what He will share with you from His point of view.
God, what would change if I saw this a bit more through your eyes?
Have a good talk.
