Question

God, how can I notice your beauty on display today?

Here's the episode transcript

Hey, friend. In today's episode, we're talking about noticing God. And we're practicing noticing Him as involved and present in our day-to-day lives. And we're doing it through a lens that honestly was really convicting for me. As I started prepping for this episode, I wrote down the line, "God is not just useful, He is beautiful." And that stopped me in my tracks because I didn't always know that or think about God in that way. I thought of Him as useful. to help me free me from sin, useful to transform my life, useful to answer my prayers, to show up in ways that I needed Him to. And God does all of those things. But if I only think of Him that way, I can fall into this really limited view of God that is transactional. “You do this for me, and I do this for you.” And I can overlook His beauty.

God is not just useful, He’s also beautiful.

He's not a tool for me to use at my good pleasure or toward my own aims. He is high and exalted and glorious and majestic and beautiful.

And as we go about our days today, we can notice how God is present and active. How He is training us in righteousness and transforming our lives and forgiving our sins and empowering us when we fall short. All of those things are true. And also we can see how He does that with such beauty.

In Psalm 27:4, it says, "One thing I have asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord And to inquire in His temple.”

Sometimes I can be so caught up in my needs that I rush in to inquire of the Lord. I can picture it as if I'm running into this ancient temple, running in to inquire of Him, and I can overlook the opportunity to gaze upon His beauty.

And so today we're practicing something different. We're lifting our eyes up. Yes, please bring Him whatever hard thing you're going through. Ask Him for help. But before or after, lift your gaze up to relational attentiveness, to admire Him, to notice that He is stunningly beautiful in who He is.

And here's a question that we can take to God today, and maybe His response will spark an awareness for you or catch your eye, or prompt a memory. I don't know what that'll look like, but I know that He is with us, so we have constant opportunities to gaze upon His beauty. So here's our question: " God, how can I notice your beauty on display today?"

Have a good talk.
