Question

God, how are you present in what I'm doing today? How do you invite me to notice you?

Here's the episode transcript

Hey, friend. What if you don't actually need more time with God? Now, I don't mean that you don't want more time with him. It's amazing to spend time with God. But what if you don't need it in the way that you might have thought? In my experience, we can treat a quantity of time as a disqualifier or even as a procrastinator. "Well, I'll have more time to spend with God tomorrow or maybe later today," or "I just don't have as much time as I'd like right now, I'm gonna wait until I have more time." And the problem with that is we can procrastinate time with God and miss so many opportunities to engage with him in the amount of time that we have.

So often, we don't actually need more time to experience God as we go about our days. We simply need a different lens. Because God is near, he's not far off, and we can practice this in the things we're already doing today.

As I was prepping for this episode and thinking about the different ways that we see this in Scripture, one thing that came to mind for me was simply the way that Jesus ministered in the New Testament. He would be walking along and see someone who needed ministry and would minister to them in the moment. He would teach in parables, stories that he would use, inspired by real-life circumstances. Many scholars even believe these parables could be sparked by the things that he would see as he's journeying from one town to another. And he would use that moment, that illustration, that circumstance, to teach the people with him about the Kingdom.

I think God does that for us today. He uses the circumstances that we're navigating and the object lessons that are part of our daily lives to teach us about himself and about who we are. To be present and active with us in the circumstances that we're going through.

I also wanna read for us from Genesis 39, and this is part of the story of Joseph, and it's a harder part of his story. His brothers had sold him into slavery, and he was working for Potiphar, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian. And he had been purchased as a slave to go work in Potiphar's house. And I'm gonna read for us verses 2 and 3 of Genesis 39. It says,

“The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did."

Now, this actually doesn't speak to how Joseph spent time with God, and in no way am I saying don't spend intentional time with God. But what I wanna illustrate for us is that as we go through the things in our day, as you apply yourself at work, there are ways that you can notice God being there with you. There are ways that are so obvious that other people who do not even know the Lord can tell that God is with you. You don't need to wait until you have set-aside time to spend with God. You can participate in life with God in the moments you're going through right now.

So pick something that you're already doing today. Maybe it's engaging with God in the midst of a meeting. Or in a difficult conversation with your children. Or as you're prepping for something at home or at work. What if you can notice that God is there with you? And what if you could engage with him in a different way?

He is here. God is here. And so the problem isn't solved by just having more time. Life with God occurs when we engage with God in the time that we have. Your awareness of him can fit inside your real everyday life. And the more that you do this, the sweeter those set aside times with God become. And then those times catapult your awareness for the busier moments as you're going along the way with Jesus.

And so here's a question I invite you to take to God today to see what he would share with you:

God, how are you present in what I'm doing today? How do you invite me to notice you?

Have a good talk.
